Sometimes, it’s the little things which make all the difference…
No joke – back in 1994, Barbara Hobart, was a Los
Angeles-based TV comedy writer/producer who started making decorative light
switch plates as a hobby. In 2003, while
visiting friends in London, she offered to make them a switch plate to replace their plain,
boring, white switch. She was told: “You can’t. UK switches are wired into
the wall and are not removable.” “Can’t”
isn’t a word in her vocabulary. And so, a
challenge became an opportunity – and a business.
When she returned to Los Angeles, Barbara created HomePlates: a
collection of decorative switch plates which required no rewiring. Made of sturdy ABS plastic and proudly Made
in the USA, in 2004, (just nine months after visiting with her friends) HomePlates introduced the first decorative light switchplate cover to the United Kingdom.
In 2010, HomePlates began injection molding a
line of covers for its USA collection. These switchplates had no visible screws and required
no assembly. Each image/design was printed directly onto the front of each
plate.
With the ever-changing market, and taking the design process one step further, in
2012, Barbara had another brainstorm and introduced a new brand to the collection, replacing
the original HomePlates Switchplates:
Artitude by HomePlates: the first and only Acrylic switchplate
-- with No Visible Screws. No Tools or
Hardware are required for installation. Each
image is printed on the back of the
switchplate and seen though the front... giving the image a unique depth.
But, no
matter where HomePlates are sold, HomePlates always manufactures its product in
the USA. We never
outsource. “I am proud of the quality and the “Made in America” label.” That is one thing that will never change.
P.S. Barbara is often asked "do you still write?" The answer is "yes."
